On July 6 - 9, the American Energy Society cohosted with the University of Illinois, Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory the 11th annual SISE Conference: Systems Rethinking.  

Thought leaders from every energy subsector considered the greatest challenges in energy today, exploring key issues in the built environment, transportation, industry, manufacturing, agriculture and water. Each virtual session opened with an expert presentation on the current state and direction of the field, followed by an open discussion with SISE Fellows and the public.

Background: “In This Together,” a virtual conference, covered a variety of topics related to energy and the environment.  All participants had opportunities to personally engage with thought-leaders in solutions-oriented dialogue; an exclusive group of selected students used the tools of GoogleMaps and LinkedIn to build communities of purpose.

The Digital Oilfield; ​A Whole New Ballgame
​Minute Maid Park, ​Houston, Texas, ​November 13-14, 2017
“The Digital Oilfield" was a private, solutions-oriented conference that focused on new and emerging technology-driven business models, security and risk factors, and scenario planning seminars about digital technology adoption. Confirmed speakers included C-suite executives from Chevron, Statoil (Equinor), DCP Midstream, North Highland, the Texas Railroad Commission, and more.

The nexus of energy security and national security were addressed in the opening keynote, delivered by Commander Kirk Lippold, USN (Ret.), and in the closing address, delivered by Mark Mills, the AES Energy Writer of the Year, 2016.  Conference attendees were also treated to a special presentation from the 2017 World Series champion Houston Astros on the impact of data-driven technology in baseball, as well as a private on-field tour of Minute Maid Park.

CDR Lippold was in command of the USS Cole when it was targeted by a deadly al Qaeda terrorist attack in 2000, 11 months before 9/11. His team training prior to the attack and unflappable leadership after galvanized his crew to action, resulting in lives and the ship being saved.

The American Energy Society hosted a Congressional Briefing, "Carbon Capture: Tomorrow Just Happened."
​
It was a balanced, thoughtful, non-partisan discussion that emphasized the technical aspects of sequestration, utilization, and commercialization. Discussion topics included emerging energy technologies suitable to the Upper South, with special emphasis on potential business development and job creation.

Gary leads the Texas Carbon Management Program, focusing on carbon capture from coal and natural gas power plant flue gas to help mitigate anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The program's primary focus is to investigate post-combustion amine scrubbing, which is a flexible, tail-end technology that can be retrofitted onto existing power plants or be included as part of a greenfield installation.

OPUS 12 is developing revolutionary technology that transforms CO2 emissions into cost-competitive liquid fuels and chemicals, using only water and clean electricity as inputs. The technology can bolt onto any existing source of industrial CO2 emissions, from petroleum refineries to fossil fuel power plants. The products generated have a lower carbon footprint than conventional fuels and chemicals, but can be produced at similar cost.
