Energy News To Know Today ...
Threats to Mexico's energy-economy |
Mexico's energy-economy has grown in the last half-decade, culminating in the discovery of a giant oil reservoir off the Gulf Coast (for more on The Whale, see "Markets" in vol. 6(4) of Energy Matters). However, Mexico's energy-economy faces a significant threat from a series of non-market related forces that have the potential to disrupt:

New additions ... the best energy resources on the web
(Editor's note: please don't hesitate to recommend a resource that should be added to the list.)
(Editor's note: please don't hesitate to recommend a resource that should be added to the list.)
- New - Founder's Playbook, by Cyclotron Road, a curated, searchable library of essential reading and example materials related to launching and growing a hard tech company.
- New - The Natural Resources Defense Council launched a new tool to track the development of four technologies: wind and solar power, LED light bulbs, and electric vehicles.
- New - MIT researchers have completed the first phase of a working resource that calibrates the cost of preparing for natural disasters in hazard-prone areas of the US. The highlight of the project is an interactive “dashboard”, which uses a "Break-Even Mitigation Percentage (or, BEMP) to calculate the risk and level of investment needed to mitigate future building damage.
- New - The "ISIS Files," an archive of thousands of internal documents about the Islamic State and its finances.
- ENERGY SYSTEMS: A brilliant interactive shows relationships throughout the entire energy systems sector.
- CLIMATE CHANGE: NASA deserves applause for this site that is grounded in scientific and balanced information. Click on the nav-bar for a range of data on CO2, temperatures, ice, sea-levels, etc.
- COMPARATIVE ELECTRICITY PRICES: A non-interactive (ie, static) comparison of average electricity prices, by state.
- OIL & GAS: The WorldMap group at Harvard may have tried to "boil the ocean" when it built this map of all the oil and gas fields in the world (be patient because load-time is long and interactive features are clunky). And yet, the value of this pilot resource is impressive. A far simpler resource is Pipeline 101, a map of the oil and gas pipelines in the US, by seven regions. AES applauds!
- WIND: These resources are as useful as they are beautiful. There is a map of wind blowing in real-time, another with the same information about global wind conditions in real-time, and another just for wind conditions in the US. AES applauds!!!
- COAL: Though a bit dated, the map of global coal trade routes shows the depth, breadth and impact of coal as a source of energy.
- US POLITICAL CULTURE: Six maps show how Americans think about climate change.
- NUCLEAR: A useful map of all operating nuclear reactors is interactive and engaging.
- ENERGY CONVERSION CALCULATOR: It lacks cool graphics, but this comprehensive resource will convert any energy-related measurement into any other measure.
- PLANET EARTH: A primer, NOAA provides deep data, map and GIS dive into a range of themes, from sun to fish to oceans to....
- POLICY - RENEWABLES STATE INCENTIVES: DSIRE is the go-to site for state incentives for renewables. Period.
- THE COST OF ELECTRICITY: Any levelized cost study by Lazard is extremely valuable. (Note: the link is to version 10.)
- CLIMATE: Pure data, HadCRUT4 is a global temperature dataset for gridded and average temperature anomalies across the world.
