2025 Subject Librarian of the Year
All STEM Subject Librarians in Higher Education This year, the American Energy Society is proud to honor not just one individual, but the entire community of STEM subject librarians in higher education. At a time of unprecedented headwinds--declining institutional budgets, rapid shifts in research habits driven by artificial intelligence, and reduced federal and state support for libraries—STEM librarians continue to uphold the highest standards of scholarship, access, and intellectual rigor. They guide students and faculty through an increasingly complex information landscape, champion trustworthy sources, and ensure that scientific knowledge remains discoverable, contextualized, and usable. In recognition of their indispensable contributions, AES is pleased to offer complimentary full membership to all STEM-related librarians in higher education, as a small but sincere expression of our gratitude and support. The Subject Librarian of the Year Award recognizes subject librarians making outstanding contributions in library services. We are particularly interested in those working to promote energy and sustainability literacy.

Past awardees
There are over 3,200 search engines on the internet, and with so many choices it's not easy to determine which ones find information needed by engineers. Enter Jill Powell, engineering librarian at Cornell University. From launching new outreach initiatives, to overseeing the renovation of libraries, to building best practices around the library's digital projects, publications, services, and operations, she does it all. Recognition of Powell (and her colleagues) is very well-deserved.
"I'm honored to accept the award but do so on behalf of our entire staff here at Ford Library and my colleagues who most directly support our users, especially Jane Day, Paula Robinson, and Brittany Wofford. They are our front-line staff who support student and faculty research focusing on energy markets and the intersection of climate data, policy, and business. All of our Ford librarians and colleagues across Duke Libraries provide valuable input that enables library leadership to bring on the resources that support Duke University's mission to become 'The Climate University.'"
